While there is no such cure yet for the disease, the only option is to tackle the symptoms and stop the platelet count from falling down further. Generally, doctors advice medicines, blood transfusion or intravenous fluid replacement to manage the fever and restore hydration levels but alternative forms of healing too offer some scope in fighting the disease. They have also been used as a complementary form of healing medicine to treat the deadly dengue virus. We tell you two of the most common and effective treatment plans:
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)
Traditional Chinese therapy has its roots in healing the body by clearing the collected plaque and detoxing the body. It recommends the usage of certain herbal concoctions based on the ancient formulation, ‘qin wen bai tu san’. While traditional Chinese medicine does not offer any cure for the disease, the treatment plan can support recovery based on the prognosis and stage of infection.
The therapy starts only after the infection has been diagnosed. Depending on the stage of the disease and checking the platelet count, TCM therapy advises patients to eat a dose daily for three days. If the platelet count still doesn’t rise up, hospitalization is adviced. Chinese traditional beliefs also support the usage of certain herbs and food items to cool the body naturally and ward off infections. The most common treatment plan includes adequate consumption of foods like bitter gourd and papaya seeds, along with animal meat to heal and aid recovery. While bitter gourd detoxifies the body and balances the ‘fire’ element in the body, the meat ensures that you get the strength to regain energy.
Ayurvedic medicine
Ayurveda has been termed as a complementing form of medicine which can heal the body and help manage your health in a better manner. The same way, Ayurveda also supports the treatment of dengue by controlling the symptoms by prescribing natural herbs and supplements.
Ayurvedic medicine has four systems in place to treat dengue infection. While the first two are targeted to boost platelet levels and pump up the blood supply, making for an antiviral effect against the virus, the other two are centered on reducing the fever and providing a host of benefits to strengthen the body naturally.
Some of the supplements advised by Ayurvedic healers include:
-Datura leaves which have been found to effective cool the body and reduce the fever.
-Kanghi seeds taken as an infusing drink or tonic can act as a decoction to prevent and fight the viral infection.
-Papaya leaf extract contains many healing properties. Its leaves are well-known to increase the platelet count and are also enriched with anti-malarial properties, making it the best home remedy to fight against dengue fever and other illnesses
-Turmeric is a natural immuno-booster which protects the body and fights infections from the root. Turmeric should be consumed every day, in warm milk or mixed in food to enhance its benefits.
