The symptoms of a dreaded hangover are all too familiar. You wake up with a throbbing headache, your throat feels parched and you are fighting waves of nausea– does not paint a pretty picture, does it?
No matter how many times you promise yourself that you will not drink ‘this much’ the next time, we all know it is not the truth. To ensure that the nasty hangover does not steal your first day of the new year, we present you a list of tried-and-tested hangover remedies.
1.Stock up the fluids
Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up. Keep sipping water throughout the day to flush out the toxins and hydrate your body. You can also drink plenty of juices, coconut water and soups. To make sure that you drink enough water throughout the day, fill up a water bottle and keep it with you.
2.No chai or coffee
If you have woken up with a nasty hangover, we suggest steering clear from caffeine. Even though it might be very tempting to grab a hot cuppa for that pounding headache, remember caffeine will further dehydrate your body and aggravate nausea.
3. Hello bananas
To replenish the lost salt, potassium and magnesium levels–thanks to your drinking session last night–have a banana or two. It will also soothe your stomach.
4. Take a rest
Since you have already partied the last night way, now would be the time to catch some rest. Stay in the bed for as long as you feel like.
5. Eat at regular intervals
It is important to eat a protein and carb-loaded breakfast to kickstart your day, your body needs it now, more than ever. If your stomach is still churning we suggest sticking to water-based fruits, crackers and soups.
Remember:
Make sure you never take alcohol on an empty stomach. Always eat something before or while you are enjoying your drinks as this will not only slow down the rate at which alcohol enters your blood, but will also reduce the after-effects.
Also, try to alternate between an alcoholic drink and a non-alcoholic beverage. This will lead to an overall reduction in the quantity of alcohol you consume.
