Staying positive

This one has nothing to do with weird concoctions, rather it’s all a mind game. A study showed that people who had a positive attitude were less likely to catch a cold. This is probably due to the fact that happy people will take better care of themselves. So,stop wallowing in self-pity, get up, wear something comfy and order yourself some nice hot soup. Positivity might not be able to cure your cold, but it will definitely give you the will power to get through one.

The egg yolk drink

This bizarre concoction called Gogol Mogol, originates from Russia and Ukraine and is known to cure cold through its eggy-milky goodness. This drink is a combination of an egg yolk, a teaspoon of honey/sugar mixed with some hot milk and unsalted butter. Add a splash of cognac or rum if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s known to ease a sore throat and promote some delicious sleep. Worth a try? You decide.

Chicken fat and dirty socks

The main idea behind this remedy is to make the body get rid of the germs by inducing sweat. If you’re a daredevil with a bad throat then this one is for you. With its origins in England, it requires the sick person to smear their throat with lard or chicken fat and wrap dirty socks around their neck.

A bowl of lizard soup

Bye-bye chicken soup! Say hello to chicken soup! Although, there is no study which compares the benefits of chicken soup with lizard soup, it’s still become a household remedy in Hong Kong. The easy recipe requires dried lizards, yams and Chinese dates simmered together in water. Consuming a steaming bowl of soup during a bad bout of flu/cold is known to replace fluids lost from sweating or blowing your nose. How lizard soup would help? A mystery that’s better left unsolved.

Mashed Turnips

Packed with vitamin A, B and C, Turnips are a weird go-to remedy for common cold. The reason behind this is the root vegetable’s ability to act as an expectorant (can help loose mucus and ease cough). This remedy is tried and tested by people in Iran, who make a plate of cooked, mashed turnips to cure cold.

Vapour rub and feet

Was vapour rub on your chest no good? Why not try some on your feet? Apparently, such rubs are equally effective when applied to your feet to cure cold. Do what’s best for you- chest, feet or both!
