Whenever you feel pain in any specific part of your body, what do you do? Mostly, our hands subconsciously move to the area of discomfort to massage it. That is a normal thing we all do. Massaging is one of the best techniques to get relief from any kind of chronic pain and physio science backs it. But before you try this natural healing technique, it is important to understand the basics. Massaging or the act of applying pressure on some specific point of the body to get relief from any kind of pain is called acupressure. The best thing about acupressure is that you can do it anytime, anywhere and on your own. All you need to do is find the right pressure point and the right way to massage it. Most of the times, we just apply pressure on the point assuming that it will help, but massaging it the right way is essential if you want to get relief from the pain and illness.

While opting for acupressure, keep in mind that patience is the key to healing. You have to be consistent and show patience during the entire process. Improvement may not be quick but massaging regularly can help get rid of pain with time.

How to massage

Try to relax– Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and try to relax your mind. You can close your eyes and take a few deep breaths before starting.

Find the right spot– Identify the correct acupressure point and make sure you press the right spot. Try to press at the center point of the pain. Since the acupressure points are very small, if you do not feel any effect, try a different spot.

Apply firm pressure– Press the pressure points gently and only for 1 to 3 minutes. If you are muscular then you can increase the pressure.

Use the right fingers– Use your middle finger to press into the point firmly. In some cases, you can use your thumb or knuckle too.

Avoid pressing on cuts and wounds– Do not apply pressure on cuts, wounds and tumors.

Timing– Repeat this process every day as frequently as you want. You can even do it multiple times a day.
